Breathing new life into old walls
Designed by JL Pearson, this Grade II listed schoolhouse was bought by Mark and Gilly – who sought to inject new life into the building. Working with Cornwall based architect Chris Hendra, we were brought in to make this dream a reality.
When the Diocese of Truro and Cornwall Council decided to sell this beautiful property, Mark and Gilly leapt at the chance.
With architect Chris Hendra, Mark drew up plans to convert the building into two houses – one (the Middle School) for his family to lay their roots and the other (Old School) for his daughter’s family to blossom. There was also the first floor mezzanine of Market Hall, which would become the ideal space for guest accommodation.
Working with the builder to ensure we respected the restrictions that a listed property carries, we brought Mark and Gilly’s vision of a multi-purpose living space to life.
Replacing all the windows and building a conservatory, we flooded the whole building with light, breaking down the barrier between outside and in. We also worked a lot on the design features – including raising a wall for Gilly to display her colourful collection of glass bottles and cookery books.
Now echoing with the footsteps of three generations and the buzz of visiting guests, Mark and Gilly really have found their dream home.
“Märraum Architects does not do what it says on the tin! Why? Because that would limit the creative flair of this practice. I have used Märraum on three projects and have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them to anyone who is thinking of appointing an architect to deal with extensions, new build or restoration works.
I have been in construction and development for more than 30 years and I have worked with many many architectural practices throughout Cornwall and the Home Counties. If I had my time over again Märraum would be my first choice.”
