There was much excitement here at the Marraum offices when our work on the Jubilee Warehouse, Penryn picked up the award for Best Contribution to the Environment – Retro at the Cornwall Sustainability Awards.

Okay, the official winner was the splendid Robotmother Ltd who developed and manages the building, but we like to think that if Oscar-style thank you speeches were made at the event, we’d have had a shout-out.

When we first met Andrew Marston, MD of Robotmother, the brief was to convert an existing 1950s warehouse into an inspiring space for creative businesses. It also had to complement Robotmother’s existing Jubilee Wharf development and, because there was no available outside space, we had to find ways to instill a sense of community within the building.

We did that by constructing 13 high quality sustainable workspaces around a glazed central atrium. This high-ceilinged, glass-topped space, filled with natural light, houses an enormous table which is just perfect for colleagues and visitors to network, eat, drink and meet. And in case that wasn’t enough to get everyone gathered together, there’s also a ping pong table and a piano.

Shared kitchen facilities also means that our tenants can meet and greet, share ideas and get a different perspective throughout the working day.

But it’s not things like this alone that win you a Cornwall Sustainability Award. An enhancement to the community has to be backed up by being at the very forefront of best environmental practice so we fitted the roof with Photovoltaic (PV) panels to generate renewable electricity; we used harvested rainwater to flush the toilets; we installed energy-efficient under floor heating instead of radiators and we insulated the external walls to ensure a lower carbon footprint and lower bills.

Don’t take our word for it though. Jubilee Warehouse has been audited by BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology). This internationally recognised sustainability assessment method for buildings scored the project as Excellent, a rating rarely handed out to this sort of retrofit.

We were already so very pleased and proud of our work on Jubilee Warehouse, we didn’t think we could get any prouder. But now we know we could!
