Space to Share

FROM DULL AND DINGY TO LIGHT-FILLED AND FLOWING: REMOVING WALLS HAS CREATED A LIGHT-FILLED SPACE TO ENTERTAIN.

Having previously worked on a new build project for David and Denise, when they got in touch to talk to us about a nearby renovation project we were delighted to work with them again.

The couple had a number of thoughts about how they could maximise the space and make it work for them. And it was only by digging deeper that we found the solution they were looking for.

THE BRIEF

Multiple initial briefs ranged from building a sideways extension, to creating an additional downstairs bedroom, to adding a separate annexe above the existing double garage.

But once we went back-to-basics to analyse how the house would be used, it became clear that the solution lay in a sensitive head-to-toe renovation using the existing footprint.

THE INTERPRETATION

Three good-sized double bedrooms led the way for the number of people this property could accommodate: this is definitely a house to share with friends. To make the most of that we needed to open up the downstairs, transforming the small, dingy kitchen into a light-filled kitchen-diner with plenty of space for entertaining.

Upstairs the awkward separate toilets and bathrooms have been reconfigured, creating a large main bathroom and en-suite shower room in the master bedroom, as well as a dressing room in the second bedroom.

THE OUTCOME

The downstairs and the upstairs of the property no longer feel at odds with one another and where there was dullness and discord, there is now light and flow.  The new kitchen-diner is the star of the show, bringing a large shared space into the heart of this home.

All three bedrooms benefit from ocean vistas, whilst the central balcony allows everyone to enjoy panoramic sea views with a morning coffee or an evening sundowner.

Subtle but vital landscaping around the property ties it into the surrounding garden, creating even more space for guests to share and enjoy.
