The Miners Cabin

Rustic at heart, carefully shaped for contemporary life in Chapel Porth

WELCOME TO MARRAUM

From the glimmer of an idea to the stroke of a pencil, the first turn of a door handle to the flickering of a smile across a face, at Marraum we bring more to your space – and take your story beyond its walls.

And we begin with you. Because at the heart of each architecture project – studio spaces, private loft conversions, commercial builds or building that dream home – are the people who use it.

They’re the yawns that stretch to eye-widening views in the morning. They’re the feet feeling cool concrete underfoot. They’re the eyes looking for inspiration at their desks. And the shoulders that hunker down in the evening. These are the people whose surroundings bring more to each and every experience.

With years of architecture and design experience in both Cornwall and further afield – paired with aesthetic drive, strong ethics and constant curiosity – we know how to make space work harder for you.So from beginning, middle and end – discover how you can bring your own story of space to life.

marraum-story
Tucked into the valley at Chapel Porth, The Miners Cabin is a careful reworking of a modest timber framed mining cottage, over a century old. Set within a landscape shaped by Cornwall’s industrial past, the project called for a sensitive balance between preservation, comfort, contemporary living.

What emerged is a home that feels both rooted in its history, quietly reimagined for modern life.

The brief

The client was clear in their ambition. This was not about transformation for the sake of it, but about retaining the raw, rustic character of the cabin.

They wanted a place to retreat, somewhere that felt connected to the landscape, grounded in simplicity, yet refined in its execution.

The interpretation

Our approach was led by restraint. Rather than overwrite the building’s identity, we chose to work with it.

The existing dormer was retained, the extension followed the same language, ensuring the building read as a natural evolution rather than a contrast. Timber cladding, a corrugated roof, honest detailing all reinforce the cabin aesthetic.

A key moment within the design is a carefully positioned hidden bed. Aligned with a narrow view down the valley, it captures a fleeting glimpse of the sea. Subtle, deliberate, true to the spirit of the building.

Working within a World Heritage Site brought its own challenges. Respecting the character of the area was not just a planning requirement, it was fundamental to the success of the project.

“They really listened to what I was after but added ideas and designs beyond what I thought was possible. Blending traditional and contemporary styles to create something very unique"

The outcome

The result is a deeply atmospheric home. One that feels both humble, crafted.

The interiors reflect the client’s vision, layered with texture, warmth, high quality finishes that elevate the simplicity of the space.

A covered porch extends the living experience outward. It becomes a place to pause, to sit, to watch the sun settle behind the surrounding engine houses. A quiet moment that anchors the building to its setting.

Throughout, the connection to nature is constant. Views unfold carefully, never overstated, always intentional.
