Channeling skills into our own directors’ home

From the glimmer of an idea to the stroke of a pencil, the first turn of a door handle to the flickering of a smile across a face, at Marraum we bring more to your space – and take your story beyond its walls.

And we begin with you. Because at the heart of each architecture project – studio spaces, private loft conversions, commercial builds or building that dream home – are the people who use it.

They’re the yawns that stretch to eye-widening views in the morning. They’re the feet feeling cool concrete underfoot. They’re the eyes looking for inspiration at their desks. And the shoulders that hunker down in the evening. These are the people whose surroundings bring more to each and every experience.

With years of architecture and design experience in both Cornwall and further afield – paired with aesthetic drive, strong ethics and constant curiosity – we know how to make space work harder for you.So from beginning, middle and end – discover how you can bring your own story of space to life.

The day Marraum directors Daisy and Adam moved into their new home, they sat in the master bedroom window in awe at the sunrise rippling over the Roseland waters. Having been in two minds about the property, this moment cemented their choice as the right one. Everything else about the house, however, left quite a lot to be desired.

Ever keen for a challenge, Daisy and Adam (with new baby Alfie in tow) embarked on a year-long renovation project, transforming their terraced property into a space that could integrate work, life and raising a child in perfect symbiosis. For them, it was all about creating flexible spaces that moulded to their lifestyle, following the very architectural process they pioneered with Marraum.

The house was in need of real attention if it was to become somewhere they wanted to establish their family. So every evening and weekend became alive with activity, tearing down walls and ripping things out – essentially paring the build back to its bare bones.
An exposed courtyard, which connected the main house to the rear building (an old sail loft), was begging for more purpose. So Adam and Daisy developed plans to incorporate the neglected space into the main house, by means of a new roof and an impressive LED-lit roof lantern linking it to the rear building. This, in turn, was transformed into a living room and rear garden with further views of the water. And, of course, they found the space for a cocktail bar too!
As sticklers for usable and beautiful spaces, no place was more important than the kitchen – so finding the perfect kitchen designer, able to translate their needs, was imperative. Colin at CK Kitchens was able to improve upon their initial thoughts - creating a hardwearing, clever and simple space that reflects the couples’ obsessive architectural passion.

"This project has created the kitchen, dining, living space we always craved. It works so well - allowing the three of us to do different things but still be connected within the space"

When they signed on the dotted line, they weren’t 100% convinced. But Daisy and Adam couldn't be happier now it’s finished.

Using the central living area as a multi-purpose work/live/parent space has proved to be a huge success, and waking up to those sunset morning views in their master suite still puts a big smile on their faces.
