Our connection to Helston

Helston has been part of our story for as Marraum director Adam may have been a schoolboy when he moved to Helston in the late 1980s, but he knew he recognised he was in a place with a rich architectural heritage.

Wandering through its historic streets and seeing the  impressive Georgian Guildhall a centre of attention on Flora Day, a team favourite day out when Helston celebrates the coming of spring with a bright and vibrant festival that speaks to the town’s medieval roots.

Over the years, that connection has only grown through a range of local projects, each giving us a deeper understanding of Helston’s rich heritage and the distinctive character woven through the town and landscape. We have designed homes inspired by the tranquillity of the surrounding parkland and coast, adapted spaces to suit modern family life, and explored new ways to create architecture that feels naturally connected to the environment.

We have worked with clients to reimagine family homes in and around Helston, from historic agricultural conversions to grand traditional redevelopments, always drawing inspiration from the town’s evolving character. Each project has strengthened our appreciation for the people who live and work here, as well as the unique charm that defines Helston.

These days, our visits often include walks through the Penrose Estate, time spent around the lake, or simply exploring the town with fresh eyes. Helston continues to inspire our work, shaping our approach to thoughtful design with a genuine sense of place.

How we incorporate sustainability into your design

Sustainability isn’t an add-on for us, it’s woven into every stage of the design process.

From the moment we explore your brief, we look for ways to reduce energy use, improve long-term performance and make the most of natural light, ventilation and orientation.

We consider low-impact materials, smart insulation strategies and future-proof heating solutions, balancing environmental responsibility with comfort and practicality.

The result is a space that not only feels better to live in, but one that stands the test of time with a lighter footprint on the Cornish landscape.

We are passionate about being part of beautiful projects

Highly recommended. Marraum helped us convert our old fashioned tiny 2 bedroom terraced house by the sea, into a stunning, contemporary and spacious home. They have an incredible eye for space and could see that with minimal extension and a reconfiguration, we could maximise the space, and the views! We are thrilled with the result. We would never have thought it possible to achieve everything they managed to accommodate in a relatively small space, and they rose to every challenge we set them. In addition to this, they were absolutely lovely to work with. We would certainly use them for any future projects..”

I contacted Marram enquiring about their services for our house renovation. Although our time scales weren't suitable I received some honest help and advice and although Adam couldn't help me further, the impression I had for him and Marraum was very positive. Thank you Marraum for your honesty and integrity.

"Adam visited my tiny house in Wales and very soon I was a witness to his inspired and insightful views on how, for a modest financial outlay, my house could become my dream home, simply by utilising the space inside the home differently. With a few internal alterations, using the best of both the inside and outside environment, he created a very desirable, very magical home to live in. I am just sitting in the living area of the kitchen/dining room enjoying the view from the large glass double doors. It’s amazing to be able to look out at the trees and the river that runs through the fields beyond, and now, as the dark is beginning to envelop the valley, I am being entertained by the bats. My new rooms are admired by all my family and friends and, with the addition to the new kitchen of a lounge/dining area, my home has become an amazing space to socialise. Also, the addition of a bathroom upstairs, whilst still maintaining three bedrooms, has been a joyous addition! I have a lovely separate snug downstairs too that makes a very cosy reading/tv room and with the new sofa bed, creates a fourth bedroom. Thank you Adam so much for bringing your inspired vision to this tiny house of mine and for changing it beyond my wildest imagination. I know Marraum have a great team who work well together and I am in no doubt that they are the ultimate grand designers!!

Do you work with builders we already have in mind?

Yes, we’re happy to collaborate with your chosen builder. We can also recommend trusted contractors we’ve worked with before, ensuring your project runs smoothly from design to build.

Can you help us visualise the design before we commit?

Absolutely. We specialise in using immersive 3D modelling to let you explore your space before any construction begins. It’s one of the best ways to gain confidence and clarity early on.

Do you handle building regulations as well as planning?

Yes. We take care of both planning applications and the technical drawings required for building regulations approval, so everything is coordinated and consistent.

How long does an architectural project usually take?

Timelines depend on the scope of the work, a small extension might take a ten months to get on site, while a full new build could take over a year We’ll outline each stage clearly so you always know what’s happening next.

Do you take on small projects?

Yes. From compact extensions to full home reconfigurations, we work across projects of all sizes as long as we can deliver meaningful design value.

Can you design sustainably even if our home is older or traditional?

Definitely. Sustainable upgrades can be integrated into almost any home, including traditional Cornish properties. We’ll advise on the most effective improvements without compromising character.
