Taking the Leap

Type: Full house renovation

Location: Redruth, Cornwall

Status: Complete

Budget: Less than £50,000

A first home, and a first hands-on build.

Bursting with original features but in need of complete renovation… Märraum team members Adam and Daisy embarked on their first ever hands-on construction project – on their first ever home.

The Brief

Uninhabited for over three years and crumbling with neglect, Adam and Daisy’s first home presented a bit of challenge. Luckily it was one everyone at Märraum relished.

With damp issues and woodworm that had eaten its way through most of the building’s floors, and a limited budget, the work was most certainly cut out. It was important to create a comfortable space for a young family to grow. To build a unique home that balanced work and leisure, with an open reception area, dining room, cosy living space and even a cocktail bar. And with limited space, they needed to make major structural changes without losing the well-proportioned rooms and flow of the layout. No mean feat.

The Interpretation

Once we put pen to paper, we soon discovered that we could fit another WC in the ground floor, tucked under the stairs. Then, by changing the access we nearly doubled the size of the kitchen.

Handling most of the building work themselves, trying their hand at everything from rewiring to plaster boarding, kitchen fitting to laying whole wooden floors – Adam and Daisy got their hands dirty with many new skills, giving them important first-hand experience and further understanding of architectural design in practice.
